GNO is always so much fun and tonight was not different. Five of us met Ann and Sue and went to see Joyful Noise. We were all pleasantly surprised that this movies was so much better than we expected. The music was great and it had a little bit of everything a good movie needs.

This is Nonna at the Howard Family Christmas. As I near my 76th birthday I find it very difficult to lose weight and my hair becomes a little grayer each day. I never know what ache or pain I will have when I drag out of the bed each morning. But like an old car I will chug along until everything breaks, leaks, rust out or falls off. Life is good...

My two grands...Madasan and Sheyanne. These two are really different but both have their special abilities that make them so dear to me. Sheyanne loves to talk and ask for advice and Madasan keeps her business to herself. She never has problems with her friends and Sheyanne is always having some conflict or another. They fuss, like most sisters, but will fight for the other if the need should arise.

Sheyanne is starting her last semester of college...we hope.

Madasan is busy playing basketball. She is the point guard and works so hard to play her best.

This is my brother Danny's daughter, Tela. Tela finally got to bring her identical twin boys home this month. They had to stay in the hospital until they were nearly five pound. They look like little dolls all dressed in their little blue suits.

This is Charles and Nell Payne. They celebrated their 63 anniversary this year. These two moved to Dierks early in their career. He started out as the football coach and basketball coach and ended up as superintendent. I started teaching in 1961-62 and he was my superintendent. I really think this couple considers Dierks their home because of the great love so many people have for them. They made quite an impact on our school and the community.

Lane Frost knives the girls loved. A very strange gift, IMHO, but since the movie, 8 Seconds came out they have been infatuated by this bull rider that was killed by a bull. They have watched 8 Seconds a zillion times and visited Lane's grave. I have granddaughters that are a little different...I love that they are different. Both girls teared up when they read the letter written by his parents.

Since Suzanne was small I started having a search gift. I make 10 question that give clues to the location of their big gift. After the girls became teens I tried to drop this tradition...running out of hiding places, but they insist each year that they had better have a search gift so we search.

Just arrived in room at Gold Nugget and enjoyed chocolate covered strawberries and I'm sure that is a NON-alcoholic beverage.

Sheyanne and friends went to Las Vagus to the National Finals Rodeo and had quite an adventure. She got to her room and was impressed with the greeting...especially the chocolate covered strawberries. (It doesn't take much to impress this gal.)

Sheyanne was impressed with the bright lights and the hustle and bustle of Vagus but not too impressed with some of the characters roaming the streets. She said she would love to go and spend all of her time at the NFR but could do without all of the other stuff.

Shey is planning a return trip to Vagus but wants to take her family with her. She tells me there is no comparison to watching the NFR on television and being there in person.

Tuesday night seven of us traveled to Texarkana to see Breaking Dawn, part 1. We all enjoyed the movie and after a little detour to Ledwells we arrived at the Waffle House for some of their famous waffles and hash browns.

We headed home but made one more detour in Ashdown. We drove by the beautifully decorated court house. All of those lights reminded us that Christmas is upon us. Ho Ho Ho!!!

The girls had a goat typing clinic at the arena today. They had eight girls and one boy participating. Amber and her husband came over and put the clinic on.

The arena was damp and everyone participating was the color of the arena dirt...even the goats.

They started at 9:00 and ended up at 3:00 so it was a full day of activity. Suzanne served lunch and it was back to work. I don't think any of the kids will have any trouble going to sleep tonight.

Tuesday night finally arrived and I was feeling so much better I no longer feared that I would’t feel like making the trip. Several weeks earlier we had ordered tickets to see the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China. This group was direct from Beijing, where they had performed in over 40 countries and they were making their first appearance in North America at the Perot Theater in Texarkana.

We got an early start so we would have plenty of time for supper at Sepatas. Four of us met two friends and enjoy a great visit while enjoying our good food. We did have one interruption that raised quite a disturbance. A young lady at the table behind us had a seizure or some strange happening. When she went down all of the food from their two tables dumped on her. Several attempted to help but one bossy lady took charge and rapidly ushered her out of restaurant.

After the excitement we resumed our eating and visiting. Finally we got all paid out and traveled the short distance to the Perot Theatre. A large crowd had already gathered but our driver let us out at the door and found a parking space nearby.

Since we had our tickets we got in and found our seats. We settled back and waited for the show to start. When they finally started we stared in amazement at the beautiful colors and the troop of very talented young people. They kept us entertained and amazed at just how skilled they really were.

All in all it was a wonderful night with good food, good friends and good entertainment.

I watched her ride three of her horses, groom them and doctor and wrap one's leg.

While watching, this white eyed dog, Poncho, needed much of my attention. He loves for me to scratch his ears. The two Corgi's were playing but not Poncho. He is our one and only outside dog and if he can get a little scratching he gets it.

I have always lived on a farm but since my daughter and her family took over the farm things have changed. Where it was once just raising cattle now there is much more adventure. Showing cattle and preparing for the Rodeos is a full time job. Madasan does takes time from her busy schedule to play basketball but had to leave off softball because there just was not enough time in a day. Sheyanne is a senior in college so her time is pretty busy.

Riding and practicing is not all that the girls do. They are responsible for their animals. They feed them before school each day and then again at night. When they have been gone all day, to some type event, I hear them come in and look down at the barn and there they are at 1:00-1:30 p.m. feeding their livestock. Thank goodness their dad has plenty of lights around the barn so the boogers don't get them.

My responsibilities in all of this is to sit in my chair, scratch Poncho's ears, and enjoy it all. I take pictures and bring them home and write in my blog. I hear from some of my blog followers occasionally but not often enough. I get pretty amazed at some of the foreign countries that make an appearance on my blog. I know they type in a certain subject on Google and up pops Nonna's World with some story relating to what they are searching for. I bet I don't get many hits on An Afternoon At the Barn. If I do I'm sure they will think, "Those strange Arkansan people..."

Madasan, Ruby Red, Hoss and Little Boss participated in the Four State's Fair. Ruby Red earned third place, Hoss won Reserve Champion and Little Boss won Grand Champion. The best reward of all was Madasan winning Showmanship out of a group of fifty contestants. She entered the Showmanship again on Monday and won second place.

I am planning a GNO with friends to see the National Acrobats of the People's Republic of China on October 11, 2011 in Texarkana. This group is direct from Beijing and are making their first North American tour. Looking forward to supper with friends and the exciting adventures of this group at the Perot Theatre.

BUSY LIFE

Madasan showed her big bull, this young bull and a heifer in the Sevier County Fair this year. Her big bull, Hoss, won Reserve Champion, the little bull won his division and the heifer won the Maintainer Division.

She is already getting ready for the Four States Livestock Show in the coming weeks.

Suzanne doesn't ride but she is the backbone of the traveling Muse girls. She makes sure they are registered at all of the events. She has her little notebook that is filled with their scores. She makes sure they have the proper attire to qualify in these rodeos. Then she makes sure the truck and trailer is ready to travel. Brett is not able to always travel with them. The farm takes up most of his time. He provides the money for all of their adventures. They are involved in a rodeo or two almost every week.

In addition to the riding adventures Suzanne see to the preparations for the show season. Madasan always enters the County, 4 States, District and State Fairs and this requires a lot of work. She sees that Madasan works with her cattle and has them ready to show. This requires grooming, feeding and teaching them to be ready for the show ring.

In addition to all of this fun stuff she manages four egg houses, attends church services and is now selling First Fitness products. My daughter is one busy lady but when needed she sees that I get to my many doctor's appointments.

Madasan rides her twenty year old horse, Ishmael in running the barrels and poles. She has a new horse she is training to take his place in the barrels and another that she ropes off of and ties goats. She will continue to use Ish in running the poles until he runs out of steam. From the way he gets around it doesn't look like that will be any time soon.

Madasan has been riding longer than Sheyanne. She started out learning from Rachel and has become a very expert rider. She is very calm, cool and collected with her animals and they really perform for her. I mentioned in an earlier blog post that she was the over All-Around Champion Jr. Girl at the High School Rodeo.

Sheyanne is enrolled in the Ag Business Program at CCCUA. She is on the College Rodeo Team and will be taking her horse to all of the College Rodeos they enter this year. One of the requirement of her Rodeo Team is to assist with some of the events in surrounding rodeos. She worked in the DeQueen and Foreman Rodeo.

This is Shey and her horse, Sassy, running in the DeQueen Rodeo last week. Sassy is just a young horse and still in training. Shey thinks she is going to be able to move on out once she gets the hang of things.

My girls are so busy and I have two regrets...I can no longer keep up with them. They video their events and bring them home for me to enjoy in the leisure of my living room. The other regret is that Billy J. didn't get to see them ride and show their cattle. He would have been one proud grandfather.

post on FaceBook after this gang had worked all day, in 114 degree weather, to work on the arena. The girls are so pleased with their dad for getting this done. It is such a chore for them to hook up the trailer, load the horses and travel to the arena at town. Hope they enjoy it as much as they think they will.

The bowls are being filled with peach, vanilla, strawberry, etc.

First in line to sample nine freezers of delicious ice cream. Another table contained the cookies, pies, cakes, etc. Good eating time!

I made every effort to be very careful about what I ate tonight. I took watermelon for my enjoyment because I had attended a baby shower in the afternoon and had already indulged in some sweet treats. After all my good planning... Linda told me she had sugar free ice cream and Suzanne brought a sugar free pie so I decided the damage would not be to serious. I asked Linda for specific directions to her freezer of sugar free ice cream. She said the first blue one on the right side of the table. Well I dug in. I had one large heaping spoonful of her delicious sugar free peach ice cream, a small piece of the sugar free pie and some of my watermelon. I was doing a very good job of taking care of my little diabetes problem.

As we were packing up to leave I noticed that Linda's husband was taking the wrong freezer to his car. I also noticed that Wanda was packing up the blue freezer on the right with the remains of her not so sugar free peach ice cream. You know on the right means something completely different depending on which end of the table you are standing. I had eaten the good stuff and really thought Linda did a great job with the sugar free stuff. She had told me it was as near sugar free as she could make it so I decided I needed her recipe. Now I am wondering just how insulin I will need at bed time tonight.

We had a good crowd and everyone enjoyed the ice cream and the fellowship with each other. I saw one handsome young man, young to me but probably in his fifties, enjoy four heaping bowls of the good stuff...but who is counting???

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR HELEN PEARL

This is the birthday girl. When asked how old she was her response was, "I'm either 37 or 73." Happy Birthday, Helen Pearl!

Real friends are those who, when you've made a fool of yourself, don't feel you've done a permanent job. ( These two were really enjoying their ice cream cone. Proud they didn't get a picture of me eating mine.)

This group of ladies went out on the town to celebrate our friend, Helen's birthday. She has had a very difficult two years with the illness and recent death of her beloved daughter. We felt that we should make an effort to help cheer her up a little.

One of her favorite places to eat is the Fish Bowl so that is where we headed. We left Dierks around 4:00 p.m. and arrived at the eating place at 5:00 p.m. They were ready for us because I had called ahead hoping they might seat us in a nice secluded place but low and behold they put us right in the big middle of the main dining room. Now if you know any of this group you know we are not shy and have a tendency to get a little loud. Tonight was no different. When we got into really celebrating I noticed some sitting near eyeballing us. The gawking did not slowed this bunch down at all.

We enjoyed a great meal of fried fish with all the trimmings and topped it off with a blueberry muffin as a dessert. I took one with a candle and made sure I took matches to light it. I struck those matches on every object I could find and never got a flame so Helen just pretended to blow out her candle. Since we were in the big middle of a room full of serious fish eaters we left the Happy Birthday song off.

The waitress told us to enjoy ourselves and stay as long as we wanted. We remained for a while seeing who could tell the BIGGEST tale but really seeing who could top that...not sure who won.

Finally we departed that place and went the long way home with the six of us packed in my rig. We finally arrived at Mary's house where we had met. Upon arrival we decided we were not ready to dismiss this party so, as full as we were, we decided to go to Kenya's for dessert. It was at Kenya's that we probably did the most damage. One very sweet gray headed man asked us what we had been drinking. We informed him that water, tea and coffee were the strongest thing we had to drink. He couldn't believe we could have so much fun and not be half lit. With this bunch a good stiff drink would probably just put us to sleep...we don't need anything to make us have fun. That just comes naturally. When we left Kenya's the little waitress, that had enjoyed seeing some of her old teachers giggle and have fun, wanted to know where we were going next. Guess she thought our night was just beginning.

Well, we finally arrived back at Mary's and it was still daylight. When you are our age you forget that there are headlights on the car. We unloaded and headed off in the direction of our homes.

One of the most entertaining things I saw the whole night was two, WAY over 70 year olds, getting out of my third row seats. You have never heard such moaning and groaning trying to get out of that place. Bet next time there will be some flipping going on to see who wins that honor.

I am really late with this post. I have written and rewritten about Melinda's death and nothing seemed to satisfy me. She was the daughter of my very dear friends and the loss was very devastating to all of us. She was such a smart young lady, a wife a mother and the only child of my friend Helen. Edna sent me this article and it seemed to say just what needed to be said about Melinda so I am including it instead of my humble offering. Thanks to John Lynch for this article about Melinda.

Judge Gilbert, 46, dies

Elected in ’08, she was devoted to kids, families

Pulaski County Circuit Judge Melinda Gilbert died Wednesday after a long battle with a degenerative nerve disease, leaving behind friends and colleagues who remembered her as a scrappy but compassionate courtroom battler who was devoted to the welfare of families and children.

One of the 6th Judicial Circuit’s three juvenile-court judges, Gilbert was elected in 2008 to replace Rita Gruber, who was elected to the Arkansas Court of Appeals. Gov. Mike Beebe will have to name a replacement for Gilbert who will serve until the next judicial election in two years.

Friends and colleagues recalled Gilbert’s tenacity and her compassion just hours after her death Wednesday from multiple system atrophy, a rare condition that affects the nervous system with symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. It is incurable, according to information from the National Institutes of Health, and more likely to be found in men over 60 than it is in a 46-year-old woman like Gilbert, the mother of teenagers Caroline and Connor and wife of 21 years to Carroll Eugene Walls Jr.

“She was a fighter,” Judge Vann Smith, the district’s administrative judge, said. “It’s a sad day for the judiciary. Not only was Melinda a fine judge, but a great person who really cared about children.”

Gilbert was a “formidable opponent,” but a warm and outgoing friend who could leave those differences behind outside the court, attorney Sam Hilburn said.

“When we would tangle up, it was a fight,” said Hilburn, who served as Gilbert’s campaign treasurer. “You knew you’d been in a trial, but win, lose or draw, she was still your friend.”

Fellow Judge Richard Moore said his 15-year friendship with Gilbert grew out of his respect for work she did for him while in private practice.
“She was as smart as any lawyer I’ve ever known and worked harder,” he said.

Diagnosed with the disease in the fall of 2009, Gilbert fought hard to resist its advances and to keep working, Moore said, even as the condition forced her to use a walker and then a wheelchair before she was forced off the bench in the fall of last year.

“There’s not many who would still be working as long,” he said.
The best description of Gilbert he’s heard is that “if toughness was a cure, she’d be cured,” Moore said.

Gilbert had to go through two elections to win her seat. She lost the first, coming in second against a better known opponent who outspent her, but the 1,180-vote loss was good enough to get Gilbert into a runoff, which she won by 4,580 votes.

She told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that year that the judgeship was the pinnacle of her legal career, which focused mainly on family law.

“I have spent the majority of my career trying to make the legal proceedings more user-friendly for children and also championing the legal rights of children and families,” she said. “It’s [the culmination] of everything I’ve done for the last 20 years representing juveniles and families.”

Gilbert gave the credit for her victory to her supporters, but friends said it was Gilbert’s efforts at personally meeting voters that gave her the victory. She spent the last two weeks of the campaign standing in front of Little Rock City Hall for 11 hours each day to greet early voters, even though she was suffering from pleurisy, bronchitis, an abscessed front tooth, a kidney infection and other problems.

“My grandfather taught me early on that anything worth having is worth working for,” she said. “And you can’t ask volunteers and friends to come out and help if you’re not willing to do it yourself.”

The girls took a little road trip over into OK and came upon a little town called Muse. They thought this was such a wonderful discovery. The stopped and snapped a few photos. The girls wanted to steal a sign but their mom insisted that pictures was all they were taking for this little town.

This is my husband and my daughter just a few years back. Suzanne was around two or three so this would have been around 1972. Suzanne was looking through old pictures and found this one. She made it her profile picture on FB for Father's Day in memory of her dad. (I think she was probably crying in this picture.)

Time has really changed since this time. She was so afraid of animals and the more we encouraged her the less she liked them. She had horses and Billy J. had cows and she wanted no part of them. She did like dogs and cats but nothing big.

Now her life is completely emerged in animals, big animals. They have egg houses and she wades in and kills sick chickens, they have cattle and she will lead around a 2,000 pound bull with no fear, she helps the girls with their horses but seldom rides herself. She is no longer afraid and will load cattle, horses and bath them with out fear. Her dad would be so surprised to see this side of her. When he died she had not yet started this adventure because Sheyanne was only two years old. Five years later along came Madasan and things have been never been the same. They are busy during the show season showing cattle in the fairs and the rest of the time they are busy with their BIG interest in rodeoing.

This is Madasan with her biological grandfather, Danny. Since it was Memorial Weekend they had the 21 girl salute and she presented Danny with an American flag in honor of his serving in the military.

Madasan was the All-Around Champion Jr. Girl and won a saddle. (Saddle is being made to her specifications.)

Madasan and the five buckles she won at the High School Rodeo. She got buckles for the following: Reserve Champion Jr. girl in barrels, 4th in Poles, 7th in goat tying, 11 in breakaway and High Point Finals Champion Jr. Girls.

Judge Melinda Gilbert

My friend, Helen, had one daughter, Melinda. She graduated with honors from our school and went on to study law. She practiced law for a few years and then became a judge. She didn't get to judge juvenile cases very long because she became ill with a very serious disease, Multiple Skeletal Atrophy (I hope I have that disease right). The disease gradually took over her life and despite her efforts, the efforts of the best doctors and her family she lost her battle fr0m this terrible disease.

This is the main street in Dierks. This little town has been my home for the past 75 years minus a few while away at college. Some like the big cities and bright lights but I love this little quiet place with its snail pace life. When trouble hits everyone is ready to come to the rescue of those in trouble. Today, tornado sirens went off and people scurried to their storm shelters (storm cellars, storm house, etc.). Parents were taking their children from school as tornadoes sirens screamed and then the flood hit. Several people were rescued from their flooded homes by brave young men. Cows were being swept away by the high waters and baby calves were in the most danger. Many came to their rescue with a helping hand. It seems that in times like this the true heroes seem to surface ready to help with little thought to their own safety. Many other towns in AR were not as fortunate as our little town. There was so much more destruction in other areas of AR. ~Todd

Hariol passed from this life on Wednesday. He will be missed by so many in the community. His greatest gift was helping those that were sick and needed assistance. The list of people he has helped is quite extensive. He called to check on the sick, he carried them to the doctor, he took them for treatments, etc. Hariol was the person that helped me the most when my husband was ill. I knew that I could call on him at any time and he would be there to assist with any problem that I had. I will always remember his caring nature and wiliness to help.

Madasan's friend outlined all of her bruises and injuries to her knee. A while back a horse kicked her in the knee and then with a year of rough basketball she was instructed to start physical therapy immediately after basketball season. She started today and with hard work MAYBE she will be able to take care of these injuries without surgery. Horses and basketball can be hazardous to the health but since these two things are the love of her life I don't see her giving up either one. She is one tough little gal!

Tuff in his happier days.

I shared Tuff's story with you in an earlier post. After the steroids were used up he returned to the terrible condition he had earlier. He was so stiff and hurt so much he could hardly walk or get up. Finally on Friday, February 11, 2011 he woke up unable to move. I called my daughter and she came and comforted him and realizing that he was suffering so much and was not going to get better we decided several hours later to call the vet and have him come and made his departure easier. Many tears were shed over this precious dog.

Oaky was a 1,900 pound Maine Anjou bull that Madasan had shown in the 2008 and 2009 show season. He won Grand Champion Bull for two years at the AR State Fair. He had been retired from the show ring and was being used as a breeding bull. He had already proven himself by being the father of many beautiful Main Anjou babies.

Tonight when we returned home from church Brett had the bad news that he found Oaky down in the little creek, behind the house, and he was dead. It appeared that he had been fighting with Oscar the bull that was retired before Oaky.

There were many tears shed around their place tonight. They get as attached to these 1,900 pound animals as much as we do our small pets. Oaky had his own personality...he only liked Madasan.

Our pet cemetery now has two beautiful bulls (Romeo and Oaky) buried beside my dog Tuff.

Following the game both teams and coaches gathered at center court for a prayer. Impressive! Yes, we still pray at our school.

Adriana gets sick before every game. She has done this since Peewee ball. Poor baby! She doesn't let it get to her she just grabs the trash can and then takes care of business. She is making a super good player.

Madasan loves her some basketball. She gets beat and banged up. She has bruises, blisters, corns, knots on her head, bad knees, hurt back, etc., but continues to give it her all. I counted the number of times she fell/was splattered during the district game and the number was nine. None of this slows her down.

SHE knows I don't look my handsome self and still she is taking my picture...

My name is Tuffy but SHE calls me Tuff. I came to live here around seven years ago-I can’t remember. I have had a very good life but recently I have been having some major problems. I accidentally go into a fight with a big glassed eyed dog that needed an attitude adjustment and he messed me up pretty bad but you should have seen him. SHE decided that I needed to visit the vet.

That guy was so nosy he opened my mouth and looked at my gums. He thought they were not the right color so he did blood work. I wasn’t sure just what he needed more of my blood because I had lost some as a result of the fight but he insisted. He had some lady hold me down and he stuck this humongous needle into my leg and took more or my blood. It was very painful and even as tough as I am; I let out a very low growl instead of a scream, like a sissy.

After leaving the room he soon returned with the results. He said I had a very bad disease. I had one of the worst types of tick fever. My count was up or maybe it was down I got so excited I didn’t get all that little red headed vet had to say. One thing I know is that he gave me a big shot with another humongous needle and once again I contained myself and only let out a low growl.

He treated my bleeding ear and patched me up as best he could and sent me home with some medicine. As the days went by I got over the fight with that smart-alecky glass eyed dog but the tick fever was trying to get me down. I started hurting and my body became so stiff I could hardly move. I had a fever and felt just awful so SHE decided to take me back to see the red headed vet. The sweet lady lifted me upon the examination table and it hurt so much but I was very brave. SHE comforted me because she was so worried about me and I think she really dreaded for the vet to stick me again. Sure enough, he poked me again and found that the disease was raging in my body. I was really sick and SHE gave them permission to keep me so they could try to make me better. I was so lonesome locked up in that little cage but felt so bad it didn’t really matter. I did miss SHE and I knew she was missing me and was so worried.

I stayed for three days and finally felt better. SHE called to check on me and the girls came down to visit me because that glass eyed dog also had tick fever. His was not bad like mine-lucky dog… Finally I got to go home with more medicines to take. SHE knew that I didn’t like to take pills so she started poking the pill in little pieces of wiener. I usually gobbled them up but on some days I didn’t even feel like eating anything but with a little coaxing I finally took my medicine.

When the steroids ran out I rapidly returned to being sick again. Once again I returned to the hospital for a few days. I heard the little red headed doctor say that I might not get any better. SHE was so sad. I went home again still do not feel great. I take my medicine two times per day and will taper off the steroids. I worry about what happens when I can no longer take the steroids. The little red headed doctor told SHE that he would not talk her out of giving me one of those shots that make me have no more pain and suffering. SHE hates to see me suffer so much and is having a big problem making the decision to give me that shot.

Right now I am down to about six days of the steroids. SHE will then give me another medication but I worry that it will not work like the steroids. I spend most of my time sleeping and SHE tries so hard to get me to eat. I fear that my days of running in the pasture, chasing that pesky goat, impressing SHE with my guard dog duties is about over. I no longer feel up to the challenge. One thing I do know for sure is that SHE loves me and has a big decision to make in the near future. What will it be???

This is the crew just before the movie started. By this time a couple had arrived and were lucky enough to get in our picture. Bet they thought we were a rowdy bunch.

This was our waiter, Andrew...couldn't miss an opportunity to reward him for taking our picture. He said he didn't smile because he had just chipped a front tooth but I bet if one of the cute young ones in our number had been the one in the picture he would have "busted out in a smile".

We decided to go to Idabel for our GNO. We left town at 4:30 and arrived at our destination about an hour later. We had a delicious supper at a neat fish place and then arrived at the theater to see our movie. Imagine our surprise when we were the only people there. Parking was great and no crowd. We walked into a completely empty theater. Eventually about a dozen more people arrived. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that two other hometown gals were also at the same movie!

Christmas morning was pretty exciting at my house. The Muse family arrived around 9:00 a.m. to enjoy a ham, eggs, gravy and biscuit breakfast. There was some excitement because of Sheyanne's new dog, Polly.

Tuff was not happy at all to have Miss Polly in his house. Looking at the pictures you can see that at no time were his ears up. He didn't feel well and certainly didn't want to share the attention with the new dog.

After breakfast we enjoyed exchanging gifts. The girls still insist on having a search gift. This year I had a gag gift and they were so disappointed at the end of their search. They were then given their final clue and the better gift had to be found. I keep thinking that one day they will out grow this tradition but each year they make sure that their big gift is a search gift. (I have ten clues hidden all over the house and they must search for clues until they find their gift.)

We had a great Christmas. There is nothing like sharing good food, exchanging gifts and enjoying each others company to have a great Christmas.

Tuff is still sick. He has tick fever and his Christmas was partly spent in the hospital. He is taking strong meds but continues to feel bad.

This is me and my precious daughter, Suzanne. She continues to brighten my life since she entered it in 1969.

This is Christmas night. Sheyanne is having so much fun trying to get all of us into the picture. Goofy bunch but oh, how I love them.

My two granddaughters really light up my life. They make me feel so special. I am so thankful to have these two lovely young ladies as my granddaughters.

These ladies are my sister-in-laws. I think my brothers did a great job of selecting wives. Jo is Ronnie's wife, Jeanna is Richard's wife, Jacque is Danny's wife and Paula is Tom's wife. (We lost Danny and Tom a few years back.)

These are the great-grand-kids of my mom and dad. Eight are missing because of previous arrangements. (Halton didn't want to corporate in the picture taking.)

These are the grandchildren of my mom and dad. Four were not able to attend the festivities.

This is my remaining two brothers. Ronnie is very ill and just today I received word that he is in intensive care with congestive heart problems.

We had a wonderful Christmas with friends and family. I regret that everyone didn't get to attend the festivities because everything was so nice. Sonia and Kevin served as our host this year and everything turned out just great.

It seems that the season has brought with it so many health problems. Ronnie just can't seem to get to doing better and I worry so about him.

One of my very dear friends, Hariol, just got a very serious diagnosis and will be undergoing some major treatments in the near future. Hariol was one of the people that helped me the most when my husband was so sick. He was truly a life saver! Edna, his wife is a dear friend and has always been there for me.

Another dear friend, Helen, is suffering greatly with the health of her daughter. She has left her home to assist with the care of her daughter. My prayers are with her each day for the struggles this family is experiencing.

We have so much to be thankful for even with the sickness and heartache surrounding us. This time of the year brings back all of those lovely memories of times past. We remember those loved ones that have gone on before us but we also look forward to what the future holds for us in the coming year.

I planned to put a picture of my midget tree on here but decided to wait for that and show you a picture of Shey and her new friend, Casey. She had several good pictures but this one was my favorite.

Sonia plans to have the Howards over for Christmas. Our family continues to grow and when we are all present we have a humongous crowd. We pretty well fill up a house. It can get pretty exciting with all of the little ones and all of the old ones...oh, that would be me. I forget that I am now the old one among our number.

I have my little midget tree up and all of my presents wrapped. The girls just about flipped when they saw that I had down sized my tree this year. They threatened to drag out the old one but I informed them that it went out with the trash after Christmas last year. When the gifts started piling up around the little tree they gradually decided it looked pretty good.

My dog, Tuff, is back in the hospital. This is his second round since being diagnosed with tick fever. He has been one sick dog and doesn't seem to be getting much better. The vet called today and said he was not showing much improvement but was eating a little better. It imazes me that I miss him. I fuss about him and then when he gets sick I worry about him. He has been sick off and on for the past three months. I fear that he will not make it because nothing seems to work with him. Dr. B. thinks steroid shots might do the trick but we will see.

I am rambling again tonight. I do that sometimes...especially when I don't have much to tell you. I did do one thing tonight. I went down the road to see my neighbor's decorations. If you are out searching for Christmas lights you don't want to miss the Harvill's place. They really did a fantastic job of decorating their place. It is worth the four mile drive to see all of their work. Beautiful!

MADASAN IN ACTION

Madasan has swollen knees, bumps on her head, a swollen elbow, etc., etc. She gives it everything she has plus some. She comes out of the game all beat up but she loves it.

She has played with her team for several years. They started out in the Pee Wee program and have developed a great relationship. The only difference is changing coaches. Sometimes that can be a pretty difficult adjustment but Madasan seems to adjust pretty well.

When I go to the games I refuse to sit with my daughter and oldest granddaughter because they get a tad tooooo involved in the refereeing and coaching to suit me. I threaten to get them a whistle on occasions but it doesn't slow them down. Madasan also has the ability to tune them out and gets on with her game plan. (Ain't love grand???)

If you live in my part of the world you take so many things for granted. For example Mother Nature got carried away with her paint brush this year. I am amazed at the beautiful colors of fall. Recently one of our local nature photographers (Greg M.) had several beautiful pictures of the Albert Pike and Cossatot Area on Facebook. I couldn’t resist letting other bloggers enjoy them. (Thanks Greg for the beautiful pictures.)

November always bring about another BIG event in Arkansas. DEER SEASON! This is one of the biggest happening around here. In anticipation of the coming season, energetic hunters put out food plots to entice the deer into certain areas. On the big day mothers, fathers, kids, etc., get out the orange and hit the woods. Some use dogs and others just sit and wait, often in elaborate tree stands, hoping to get the big one.

My two granddaughters have been seeing several deer on our property so their method is to sit and wait. Sheyanne got her eight point buck early in the morning and Madasan got her 9 point buck in the afternoon. As you can see from their pictures they were all smile.

This is one experience I have had in my life since the beginning. My father loved to hunt with dogs. Since this was his favorite method of hunting, his nick name was

“Driver”. I have listened to his stories and then after the boys got into the game the big hunt pretty well dominated the conversation at all gatherings. For some strange reason I didn’t catch the bug. I didn’t think it would be much fun to kill Bamba.

All of you that talk about Arkansas with all of our bugs, snakes, ticks, chiggers, etc., need to take a look at some of the beauty that completely outweighs those little critters.

MADASAN'S BASKETBALL SEASON STARTS

Madasan's first basketball game for the 2010-11 season was with Cutter Morning Star.

The DHS Junior Lady Outlaws won their first game against Cutter Morning Star on Tuesday night but lost the game tonight to Acorn. The Acorn game was a real heart breaker. The girls had a pretty good lead in the first half but two or three got in foul trouble and they seemed to fall apart. They were ahead until the last few seconds and Acorn beat them one point. Despite the loss they played a really good game.

The Junior Outlaws boys had their first win of the season tonight.

I didn't stay for the high school games. Gray's was calling me...

GIRL'S NIGHT OUT TO SEE WICKED

When I was invited on this trip I declined the offer but was persuaded that I could handle it. In making that decision I ran across a quote by Mark Twain that motivated me to get on with life and do what I could while I could. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream, Discover.” I know I will not be around twenty years from now but my age and my health seem to be my bowlines that often keep me from doing some of the things I would like to do. So I decided to accept the challenge and go with the girls to see Wicked*. I’m so proud I did!!

Fifteen of us ended up going on this adventure. It was an outstanding performance. It was very uptown for a group of country girls.

Julia got this group together. Five of us traveled from Dierks and met ten others for the great outing.

We had supper at Mimi’s in Little Rock. The place was packed with hungry customers and our food was late so the rush was on. We left our befuzzled waiter, John, a generous tip but by passed his slow delivery of our checks and hurriedly departed the place in an effort to arrive at Robinson Auditorium by 8:00 p.m. Julia let us out at the front and she parked the vehicle. We made it just in time…

After the show we coaxed an innocent bystander to snap a few shots of our group. (While at Mimi’s we also met a nice lady that happily snapped a few photos of our group.)

It was around 11:30 when we got out of the building and loaded into our car for the trip home. With five ladies in the car you can expect the necessity of a bathroom break before we got very far. We also made a late night visit to Krispy Kream. The Krispy Kream put the finishing touch on an exciting adventure.

Being the oldest in the group should make me feel old and decrepit but with this group of ladies I always come home rejuvenated. I sailed away from the safe harbor and believe me I caught the trade winds in my sails and soared. It was a great night!

*Wicked captivated our little group. It was the Wizard of Oz prequel story about a green woman coming of age in Oz. It was a moving tale of two witches and a dazzling green themed spectacle.

OUTLAW HORSE

All of you old Outlaw students and fans know what this big black horse represents in our community. Only an Outlaw know that this fierce horse represents the qualities that our mighty Outlaws try to exhibit in their love of sports.

Many years ago different names were suggested but the strength of an Outlaw horse is what was decided upon. Mrs. Mattie Mae told me that there was a big conflict over the selection of our mascot and the school colors. She said one suggestion was Lumber Jacks and green and yellow because we were a lumber town. Along the way purple and gold and the Outlaw horse was selected. Back in the late 50's or early 60's the colors were changed to blue and white. I remember one coach wanted to change because purple faded so badly.

For years other school would visit our campus and have outlaws hanging from the goal post like real shoot 'em up outlaws. An early story did exist that said we our coach would pick up young men working at the mill and out of school to fill in when the team could not suit up enough students. They were often called a pack of outlaws. Many, many stories exist about the early teams but finally in the 70's our Student Council decided to order a large black horse to stand guard at the entrance to our school and represent the Outlaw Spirit that exist among our students.

I remember the day the big package arrived and how excited we were. My Student Council and I had to decide where we wanted to put our horse. Some wanted to put a fence around him to keep people from being able to deface him but the big discussion was you can't fence in an Outlaw so the fence was out. We decided to put him down by the gym so as students drove up the hill to school they would see him and people could see him from the highway. He stood there until the new high school was build and then he was moved to the new school.

Through the years he has been defaced by opposing teams but never nothing very drastic. I remember the very first time he was defaced was by someone that used white spray paint to spray his private manhood parts. The Outlaws got very angry and won the next few games.

As his body gave in to the many years of weather he started deteriorating. He received many coats of paint and finally he was resurfaced with plastic but still his body was becoming brittle and finally his right foot broke off.

Years after I had retired I got a call wanting to know where I ordered the horse from. I couldn't remember but I did remember hanging on to the literature as long as I was at school but had destroyed it instead of handing it along to someone else. I think they found a company that made another horse or repaired the original and he looks great.

As you can see from the photo some students from Mineral Springs decided he needed to be decorated so they spray painted and toilet papered him. I fear that this will bring some retaliation by our students. I'm not sure about taking out their revenge on the field because we have had a pretty bad season. But let me assure you that most Outlaw fans don't take messing with their mascot lightly.

This little poem was on the wall of the old field house and I would almost guarantee that is has found its place in the new one. A former student wrote it and all Outlaw football players are aware of its existence.

We had our first Bunco game of the season. Rachel was our wonderful hostess and had great food for our enjoyment. We played with great excitement. Can you believe that?

We had three substitutes and two of them were in a three way tie for the winning award with me. Kelly won first, Judy won second and I won third. Nancy won travel and I think Maxine won loser.

This game takes no skill at all. That is the reason I love it. Just being with sixteen ladies, of all ages, makes for an exciting night. When you are retired it doesn't take much...

I thought I would end with this one. I told you earlier that I never smiled in my pictures but as you can see from this one and the one below shows a big smile. Maybe meeting Billy J. brought the smile out.

This picture was taken the first year of our marriage. Billy had been in the Army. during my senior year. I was able to join him in Fort Leonardwood, MO. We were there for two years and then went to Henderson State Teacher's College. His major was PE and mine was Elementary Education. He dropped out when he started practice teaching. He wanted to coach not teach in the classroom. We returned to Dierks after I graduated.

I thought I would give you a glimpse of the basketball shorts back in the day. They were short compared to the shorts the kids wear today. My mom frowned when she saw them but I convinced her that that was the style and it was required.

This is my mom, Thomas, Ronnie and me. We lived in this old dilapidated house until we moved to Hot Springs. (I was in the 5th grade.)We stayed there for one year and all of us loved it but my mom. She threw a fit to return to the good life. In Hot Springs we lived in a nice two bedroom house with inside plumbing. It was located on a private lake and Thomas and I learned to swim with my dad's employer's (the mayor of Hot Springs) children. We lived a great life but my mom was not happy with us having all of the fun and she was stuck at home. Finally Dad gave in and we returned to this lovely house.

We lived in this three room house until I was in the 10th grade and Dad finally decided to build a new house. Finally we had a three bedroom house with indoor plumbing, electricity and everything.

June 5, 1954 was our BIG wedding day. I think I remember that the fabric for my dress cost $3 and my mom made it. In 1954 with three brothers and one on the way there was not much money floating around. My dad worked at the saw mill and my mom worked at home.

My senior year and I almost smiled.

This is my grandmother, my brother and me. I was five years old and Thomas was three. You can tell from this photo that my grandparents lived in a mansion. It was a shack of a house but there was always plenty of good food, clean clothes and much love.

The back of this picture said I was two year old but I think I look older. This is the first studio photo I ever had made and didn't have another until I was in high school. If you will notice...I never smiled when my picture was taken. I usually cried...I didn't like cameras. Still don't!!

This is a letter I received from my husband back in 1955. He was stationed at Ft. Leonardwood, MO and I was back home in Dierks. Look at the price of stamps in 1955.

This has taken me back many years and gives you a glimpse of my earlier life. My family was hard working people and we had very little but we still had a great life. Mother canned, sewed, grew most of our vegetables and made our butter from the milk that my dad milked each morning. In the earlier days she used a rub board to do her laundry and eventually got her first gas engine washing machine. My dad worked for Dierks Lumber Company until they sold out to Weyerhaeuser. He continued to work for them and retired after 42 years. When he started work he made fifteen cents per hour. (I could write all day about the early days but will not continue this story for I fear that it will not be of interest to anyone but me.)

Living in 2010 all of this seems like a dream. Times were hard and now it seems that we are so blessed to have so much. I think my generation could go back to hard times but I fear that the younger generation might not be able to bear it. Take away their cars, computers, electricity, i pods, cell phones (any kind of phone), television, air conditioning, running water, inside plumbing, name brand clothing, and the list goes on. How would they ever survive? Ohhhh, we have it so good and fail to count our blessings for our freedom and the privileged of living in a country such as ours. We complain and gripe about the government but we still are so richly blessed.

FIRE ON MAIN STREET IN NASHVILLE, AR

Justin Billinger from KJEP posted these picture of the fire which is burning in downtown Nashville, AR. It started around 4:15 p.m. Three buildings are possible destroyed and more are expected to be destroyed.

I just saw on KLSA that all of the fire departments in Howard County are attempting to control the fire. It was reported that no one is thought to be harmed but hundreds of people are crowding the street to see the fire.

The area burning are the buildings just south of the Post Office.

2010 FAIR SEASON BEGINS...

Madasan's 2010 Fair Season started this week. For the first time she will not be starting the show season in our county. Because of a conflict with the 4-States Livestock Show she decided to show in another county so she could participate in the 4-States Fair.

There is so much work that goes into getting ready for the BIG SHOW. The girls got their cattle in the show barn on Monday afternoon. They had to put shavings out for the cattle and do a little decorating. Madasan stays at the barn all day. She exercises her cattle, bathes them and sees that they have feed and water. All day spent in a cattle barn is so much fun (in my opinion...you can tell by my picture that I was already hot and with the sun coming in it makes me look like I am bald).

Madasan is showing an older heifer and a young bull. One of her friends, Shonda, is showing one of her heifers. She is hoping she has some winners this year.

She misses a week of school so she collects her assignments and does her homework during the down time at the barn.

She participates in the county, 4-States, district and state competition. This means she misses quite a bit of school but so far she has been able to keep up with her studies and her grades don't seem to suffer.

She shows her cattle on Wednesday night starting at 6:00 p.m. After the show she is required to keep her animals in the barn until Saturday night. That makes for a long week.

Sheyanne is attending college in DeQueen so she takes Madasan and a friend to the barn, she goes to class and then returns to the barn for the remainder of the day. Their mom goes over during the day and then both parents go over until bed time and bring the girls home.

Sheyanne no longer gets to show but is around to do some bossing and helping out.

**Madasan won Reserve Champion on her bull and heifer and Shonda won Reserve Champion at the Sevier County Fair. Madasan was disqualified in Showmanship because she decided to show the young heifer that she had raised that Shonda showed. One of the fair officials disqualified her because she was not showing one of the animals she showed in the show earlier. No one told her that this was not allowed. It seemed a little strange to me that she was disqualified for having the wrong animal since Showmanship is judging the child on their showmanship skills and has nothing to do with the animal.

It has been a while since I added to my blog. So I thought I would come up with something…Reading FaceBook tonight I saw all of the excited parents with their little ones starting back to school, teachers starting off with a new group and for a moment I had withdrawal pains of what once was. For thirty-nine years I felt that excitement on the first day. I always looked forward to what the new year would bring.

Despite the few problem children, problem parents, problem teachers, new rules and regulations I still found the majority of the people I worked with enjoyable. I tried very hard to make our school an enjoyable work place, a place that the teachers and children didn’t dread coming to each day. Today my thought went back to the good days of being at school for so many years.

I am now enjoying my retirement. I think my health could be a little better but I am thankful that things are going as well as they are. I recently spent three days in the hospital. I had a combination of dehydration, anemia and some kidney problems. Since returning home I am feeling much better. I am on a pretty rigid Renal/Diabetes Diet and am eating more but enjoying it less. Sometimes you must do things you don’t like to get better. I’m working on it.

My granddaughter is starting in a new direction with her education and I have been a little anxious about that. She had some problems with one of her classes in the nursing program so she couldn’t continue with the program until next summer. She decided to enroll in CCCUA over at DeQueen. She is taking some nursing classes but is trying Ag. Business and has joined their new Rodeo Team. The Rodeo Team will be traveling all over and participating against other College Rodeo Teams. She is really excited about this. I just hope it works out for her.

The other granddaughter is in the ninth grade. She plans to play basketball and continue showing her cattle and participating in the High School Rodeo Association. Last year she was in the finals and is hoping that she will do better the coming year. As you can see, participating in barrel racing is big on the girl’s list.

My daughter’s poultry business has been pretty exciting recently. All of her help left and she has been working extra hard to keep her head above the water. Her hens are just beginning to get with laying eggs (around 3,000 per day in each house) so the girls are pitching in to help in the afternoon and she has two guys that help in one house. They are searching for a new crew to help run things. She takes care of four egg houses but two are without hens at the present time.

Now let me share the latest on my dog, Tuff. I had kept him on a chain for quite some time and finally decided that it was just too cruel so I let him run free. Surprisingly he stays around the house and does very little wandering around and getting into trouble. He begs to stay in the cool as much as possible so guess what…he stays in the cool. He is a very well mannered dog and loves me dearly. Sometimes, when I’m having a pity party, I think he is the only one that does love me.

I stole this picture because I think it is pretty spooky. This creature was caught on a game camera in Athens, AR. It is a mountain lion. Recently we have been hearing a loud growling creature near our house. When I saw this I decided it must be a mountain lion. (Julia, thanks for sharing this picture. Thanks also to Mason for catching it on his game camera.)

You might wonder about these two beauties. They participated in the Gender Bender Contest held recently to raise money for the Nursing Home. The one in blue was the big winner. Many said his rendition of one of Beyonce's songs won it for him but I think he is quite lovely. The other one won "best hair". I think he put on quite a show. He had that hour glass figure and long flowing locks. Lovely!

If you happened upon this little cemetery in the woods you might think, "Now this is a strange cemetery!" You would be right. This is a pet cemetery. All of the pets buried here were loved by one very special man. Most people just bury their pets but his pets get the royal treatment when they depart this world. Each one is given a marker because they were loved so much.

OK, what do you think happened here? This little bird was found hanging below his/her nest. A long horse hair was wrapped around the neck and that was it. It completely took the chirp out of this little fellow. Poor baby!

You can tell things are getting pretty boring at my house when I search for something to put on my blog. I did spend three days in the hospital but believe it or not I didn't get pictures.

Sheyanne and Madasan are running the barrels every chance they get. They were in a show up by Ft. Smith on Friday night and tonight they are participating in the benefit show in Foreman. It is for one of the families that lost loved ones in the Albert Pike Flood.

I worry that they spend so much time out chasing barrels but I guess that is better than out chasing boys. It is something they love and their mom is right there along with them.

Saturday found approximately 200 searchers combing the 20 miles of wilderness.
The search is expected to take several weeks. Several from Dierks were among those searching.

Teams scouring miles of river and rugged wilderness found two more bodies Saturday. This brings the death toll to 18 from the flash flood that swept through Camp Albert Pike. Many are still unaccounted for.

A pre-dawn wall of water surprised sleeping campers, leaving them frantically trying to get to safety.

Six of the 18 people killed were young children. 15 were identified from the list of 18. Those identified were from Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas.

Flash flooding in the Albert Pike area left campers stranded and search and rescue teams from surrounding counties are working the area. At this time they have rescued approximately 30 people.

Arkansas State Police reported 16 fatalities by early afternoon.

Arkansas Department of Emergency Management has set up a call center. People can call 888-683-2336 for information on missing people. The call center will be open until 10 p.m. tonight and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sheyanne started the BSN program with UAMS at Hope on May 26. She has been so excited about getting the first two years over so she could get going with her nursing degree. I hope she likes this as much as she thinks she will.

She really has to study to make her grades. Things don’t come easy for her but she has good study habits and can do it if she sets her mind to it.

She has always been a great little athlete but now that that is past she is taking up barrel racing. She seems to be taking to that quite well. Now with two running barrels I guess I will be attending more rodeos.

She is spending the night in Hope tonight and studying for her first BIG test. Several friends are joining her and hope to do well tomorrow.

This picture is the new love of her life, Pistol. He is enjoying the good life since she adopted him. He sleeps with her and is being spoiled royally.

WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON IN MY LIFE...

My life has its exciting moments and then many drab moments. Occasionally things liven up but my days are filled with reading, watching my favorite shows, searching the web, blogging, and maybe once a week I go shopping.

Recently some friends and I had a night out on the town.

We went to Texarkana and had supper at Applebee's. As we entered the building we were hugging the two new ones that joined us and ended up with everyone hugging and making a BIG spectacle of ourselves. One nice guy with a dark tan even got into the hugging. (Maxine didn't participate in this hugging game.)

While there my friend, Iris, brought out her bottle of cough syrup and politely asked the waitress if she could have a spoon so she could take it. As you can see from the photo it was a humongous bottle she had tucked away in her bag.This livened the bunch up and a few times I was afraid we would be asked to get quiet.

We enjoyed a great meal and headed out to the movies. We saw Jalo's new movie, The Back-Up Plan. We all liked the movie.

I failed to get a group picture. I took these pictures with my phone. These gals were seated across the table from me.

On Friday I joined my girls and attended a Barrel Racing

Clinic in Texarkana. It was a three day event but I managed to only go Friday and Sunday afternoon. It was pretty exciting. There was nineteen participants.

Sheyanne won in her division and Madasan would have been second but she knocked over a barrel. They were pretty satisfied with what they learned at the clinic. They love the Reinharts and want to go to their next clinic. ( Can you believe it...I didn't get any pictures of this adventure.)

On Monday Mary, Suzanne and I had doctor's appointments in Texarkana. That was super fun but we did have a great lunch out before appointment.

Today was my daughter's birthday. She is now a big 41 years old. She was pretty excited because my nephew and his wife had their baby today.

Last but not least is the adventures my dog, Tuff, has been on this week. I worry all of the time because he must be on a chain because he wanders off and pesters the neighbors. Well he broke his chain and I just let him stay out. The first day he was gone all day and came home so dirty and smelly late that night. The next day he stayed home all day and night. Next day he left but returned pretty quick. When I left for Texarkana he wanted to go but I told him to stay home and he did. When I returned he was here. He may get into trouble but at least he is happier and so am I.

My next adventure, to look forward to, is the big Bunko Luau at Julia's in June. While waiting I guess I need to finish that Nora Robert's book...

An apparent tornado plowed through Dierks, AR Friday evening. This picture was captured and submitted by Ramona Hill. The storm left behind widespread damaged to the area with damage to a several homes, a laundry mat, and several chicken houses. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries. (Thanks, Mary)

Nights can be pretty tough down in our part of the country. Last night we had severe weather in our little town. My daughter is so afraid of storms so she keeps a close watch on what is going on. The minute a WARNING is given she is at my house ready to get into the storm shelter.

We entered the shelter the first time around 9:30 p.m. and while we were enjoying our close quarters the girls were communicating with everyone in the country about what was going on in surrounding communities. “Take cover, it is headed your way!” was a common text that they received. (What did we ever do without a cell phone???)

When we came out the first time one of Madasan’s friends called and wanted to come to our house. She was scared because the storm had done quite a bit of damage in town and she was wanting out.

We had other visitors to our storm shelter when we returned for the next round of storms. You can see from the picture that the girls were keeping busy with their cells while in the cozy shelter. Our dogs joined us and were so nice while all of the excitement was going on.

Finally, the storm was over and we continued to hang around waiting for the next round. Brett and a friend remained outside while we were inside. Suddenly we heard a huge bang on the door; Brett had hit the door trying to scare us. The girls nearly had a heart attack. You know it DID NOT scare me at all…

Saturday March 6. was a big day for Sheyanne. She received her letter of acceptance to nursing school. She will start the BSN program with UMAS at Hope on May 26. With this news she was completely beside herself.

On top of that great news she and some friends, who were also going into the nursing program, took off to Little Rock for the Lee Ann, Reba and George Show. They had supper at the Roadhouse and got over to Alltel Arena early. They were first in line to see George.

What a night! She didn't get home until after 3:00 a.m. but felt that it was so worth the trip. Oh to be young again!!!
